OUR TRAINING PROGRAM
Our Approach
At Firefly Meadow Service Dogs Inc., every dog is purpose-bred, thoughtfully raised, and systematically trained with the goal of becoming a successful service or facility dog.
Our program is built on three progressive stages—Early Foundations, Structured Development, and Advanced Readiness—each designed to develop confident, neutral, and highly adaptable working dogs.
Through intentional exposure, consistent training, and real-world experience, our dogs are prepared for advanced training, partner programs, and meaningful careers in service.
Structured Development
Age Range: 4–12 Months
Program Length: Approximately 6–8 Months
Focus
Structured Development builds reliability, neutrality, and consistency. Dogs begin to understand expectations while gaining extensive exposure to real-world environments.
What We Cover

Foundational obedience (sit, down, stay, here, touch, loose leash walking)

Introduction to duration, distance, and distraction

Public access training (stores, crowds, elevators, automatic doors)

Exposure to high-distraction environments (events, sports settings, busy streets)

Development of neutrality around people, dogs, and environmental stimuli

Confidence building with novel sounds, objects, and movement

Structured rest, place training, and impulse control

Continued grooming desensitization (bathing, drying, nail care)

Participation in community-based programs and outings

Introduction to appropriate training tools as needed
Outcome
Dogs in this stage are:

Advanced Readiness
Age Range: 12–18+ Months
Program Length: Approximately 4–6+ Months
Focus
Advanced Readiness refines behavior, strengthens reliability, and prepares dogs for transition into partner programs, specialized training, or placement as facility dogs.

Early Foundations
Age Range: 8–16 Weeks
Program Length: Approximately 8–10 Weeks
Focus
The Early Foundations stage is centered on building confidence, curiosity, and positive associations during a critical developmental window. This stage lays the groundwork for all future learning and behavior.
What We Cover

Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS) and Early Scent Development (ESD) (days 3–16)

Introduction to crate training and early house routines

Exposure to a variety of surfaces, sounds, environments, and handling

Early socialization with people of all ages and other animals

Confidence-building exercises and problem-solving activities

Introduction to engagement, markers, and handler focus

Grooming and handling desensitization (bathing, restraint, basic care)

Early outings in controlled settings to begin environmental exposure

Dogs in this stage develop into:

All dogs developed through our program are raised and trained with the intent of becoming service or facility dogs, unless otherwise clearly designated for a companion home.
Through our collaborative model, many of our dogs continue their journey with trusted partner organizations, helping to reduce wait times and expand access to life-changing service dogs.
